Leica Introduces Perpetual Update Program for M8
Leica Introduces Perpetual Update Program for M8
Leica is taking an unusual approach to curtail the swift obsolescence built in to every digicam: Hardware upgrades. For 1200 ($1780) you can send your M8 back to Leica in Germany and it'll be tricked out with a new, scratch resistant sapphire glass LCD cover and, more interestingly, a new shutter which uses "less kinetic force", making it quieter and causing the camera to shake less when it is triggered.
You'll need to sign up for the program, and Leica will work through the applications. When it's your turn, the company will arrange pick and delivery, and the camera will come back with a shiny new two year warrantee.
Leica says that it is also "investigating the possibility of further upgrade steps including the camera’s complete digital section, even including the sensor itself", although it remains unclear whether this will be included in the current fee or cost more in the future.
We like this scheme. Firmware updates in gadgets have become commonplace, but hardware updates are a great way for Leica to keep its reputation as a maker of cameras which last forever. And the visual, "Best Before Infinity" gag is priceless.
